Artist in Residence

Sunny Cate – Our 2022 Artist in Residence

Sunny Cate has been a self employed artist since 2000.
Adjunct Professor, Department of Visual Arts 2001 – 2014.

Through the years I have taught workshops for elementary age children including Fun Fridays at Weber State University, weaving workshops through the Salt Lake County Library, and found art sculpture with students at Ascent Academies of Utah, Farmington.

Hawthorne students experience an array of arts opportunities, including visual art, music, and creative dance.

The school-wide visual arts program provides weekly art classes to each classroom taught by our talented and dedicated art teacher, Shelley Rich.  Students learn art history and elements of design and explore many techniques of painting, drawing, and crafts.  Each year a gallery stroll event is held featuring art from every student and is a cherished school tradition.

All Hawthorne students participate in the creative dance program taught by Corinne Penka and supported by the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program.  Dance performances are held throughout the school year with live percussion accompaniment and narration, as each class explores how their academic curriculum can be interpreted through movement and creative dance.

Hawthorne students in grades 4-6 participate in the SLC School District’s music program.  Students enjoy choral music, string orchestra, and band group instruction, and perform in music concerts during the school year.  Hawthorne Magnet ELP students also benefit from parent-funded music instruction in grades 5-6, taught by Elizabeth Ballantyne, a former Hawthorne ELP parent and accomplished teacher of music and music theory.
